On the Inversion of Wind Scatterometer Incomplete Data Sets
نویسندگان
چکیده
ERS-1/2 wind scatterometers (WSC) data sets may contain cells in which two, instead of three, measurements are available. These data sets are called incomplete. Operational inversion procedures discard such data sets and therefore no wind field is estimated. This is very limiting in semi-closed seas such as the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper we propose a new inversion procedure capable to retrieving near surface wind fields from incomplete data sets. This procedure is an enhancement of an algorithm already proposed and tested by the authors. A set of comprehensive experiments are presented and discussed. It is shown that the inversion procedure gets to remarkable results even in presence of a large number of doublets. key words: scatterometer, sea wind, wind field reconstruction

Analysis of the ASCAT inversion residual for quality control and forward modelling improvement
An important part of the scatterometer wind data processing is the quality control (QC). This report shows the implementation of a new scatterometer QC procedure, based on a comprehensive analysis of the wind inversion residual, which significantly improves the effectiveness of the wind data QC. The method is applied on the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) onboard Metop-A, but is generic and can ...

With the loss of the on-board ERS-2 tape recorders, ESA swiftly developed a new strategy for on-ground data acquisition. Rather than 14 ERS-2 data acquisitions per day, the acquisition rate has more than tripled, allowing data coverage in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas. Acquisition rate and coverage are still increasing. ESA processes all acquisitions independently, allowing user data acc...
متن کاملEstimation of Large Scale Wind Fields over Oceanic Areas around India Using Insat Derived Cloud Motion Vectors in Conjunction with Ship/buoy Data and Scatterometer Data
The low-level Cloud Motion Vectors (CMVs) derived from INSAT data are useful for estimating sea surface wind and ultimately wind stress over the large oceanic areas within reasonable limits of accuracy. CMVs are compared to ship/buoy observations collected over the oceans and the results indicate that low-level CMVS could be used to estimate surface winds to an r.m.s. accuracy of about 3m/sec i...
متن کاملThe Scatterometer Climate Record Pathfinder
While originally designed for ocean wind measurement, radar scatterometers have proven to be very effective in monitoring land cover and ice conditions and in climate studies. The NASA Scatterometer Climate Record Pathfinder (SCP) project has generated a unique climate data record from the series of historic and ongoing scatterometer missions. Image data are archived from the SeaWinds on QuikSC...
متن کاملTowards an Objective Performance Measure of Spaceborne Wind Sensors: Ers Test Case
In order to look for a generic scatterometer inversion method, the ERS inversion is revisited in this paper. First, the use of measurement noise information, which includes a realistic geophysical noise term, is tested. It turns out that the shape of the solution surface is more important than the noise information for inversion. Such shape has to be symmetric or circular as a function of wind ...
